Re: Favorite IMR 4198 loads for 45-70. I use H4198 behind a 405 gr. Remington, somewhere around 47.5 grains gives 1,861 fps from my 22" inch barrel. This load is fast enough, very accurate, and gives no pressure problems IN MY RIFLE! I think IMR-4198 is a little faster so you should find specific load info for it.I shoot a Marlin guides and Browning 1886 in 45-70, with cast bullets from various sources. I have "accuracy loads" for cast bullets 300 or 405's with 47-51 grains 3031, and am experimenting with other high velocity charges with 4198, reloader 7, 5477, all have moderate to fierce recoil, particularly with 405 gr bullets.

Compare that to Varget trap door loads at 1781 at 20,900 CUP or H4895 at 1645 at only 18,900 CUP! Some use TP or Dacron or kapok or cotton or ?? very small/light wads atop the powder.Black powder has an even higher peak pressure spike than all of them which enables it to 'bump up' the plain base bullets. IMR SR4759 and 5744 have a bit lower peak pressure and IMR 4198 even lower still. Thus, I have found IMR 4198 to work well with gas checked bullets where, if properly sized, no bumping up is necessary, but a little more ...Reloader 7 in the .45-70 is a GREAT powder to use. In my other various loading manuals, I don't see any .45-70 loads using IMR 4350 powder. This section of the AA manual is all about low power loads and all the 4350 loads are low velocity/low pressure.
